ROOFING SYSTEMS

BUILT-UP ASPHALT ROOF SYSTEMS

This is a water proof membrane consisting of alternate layers of roofing felts and hot asphalt. Most roofing felts today are fiberglass matting with an asphalt saturant. The typical system consists of a base sheet and 2 or 3 layers of ply sheet. Once the system is installed, it is covered with a flood coat of hot asphalt and clean gravel or a fiberglass mineral surfaced cap sheet is installed. Either surfacing provides for protection from ultra violet damage and gives the roof its required fire rating. Average life expectancy of this system is 15 to 25 years, depending on what type is installed.

MODIFIED BITUMEN ROOF SYSTEMS

This is a water proof membrane consisting of 1 layer of fiberglass matt base sheet and 1 to 2 layers of modified bitumen saturated polyester matting. The membrane can be installed either with mopping of hot asphalt, self-adhered or heated and melted with a propane torch. The system must be protected from ultra violet damage by coating it with aluminum roof paint or the installation of a modified bitumen sheet with granular surfacing. Average life expectancy of this type of system is 10 - 20 years, depending on whatever type of system is installed.

COMPOSITION SHINGLE ROOF SYSTEMS

These types of systems work on roofs that have a slope of 3 and 12 and greater. What this means is that for every 12 inches of horizontal travel, the roof slope rises 3 inches. The typical installation has an underlayment of #15 or #30 roof felt. On top of this is installed a composition shingle with asphalt saturants and a layer of granules imbedded in the matting. There are many different types of shingles, but the most common is the laminated shingle. This consists of 2 layers of fiberglass- reinforced mattings that are laminated into 1 single unit. Average life expectancy of these systems is 20 to 40 years.

RIDGED ROOF SYSTEMS

These systems consist of roofing materials made of slate, terracotta, concrete, metal or a combination of materials to create an individual roof shingle or tile. They are installed much like a composition shingle roof: on a sloped surface. The life expectancy of these materials can vary from 20-60 years plus.
